A message to share through Methodists of the Limpopo District

Dear Friends,

I am writing while the whole of South Africa is in the grip of strike action. We could be facing one of the most serious labour crises of our recent history. I would certainly join those who are campaigning for better salaries for workers who perform a whole range of essential public services, but would also call on unions and workers to refrain from acts of intimidation and violence.

It is distressing in a democracy that guarantees basic human rights to hear people using aggressive ‘war talk’ language. Why do we find it necessary to shout and threaten each other as if we are still living in a repressive state? This culture of violent and threatening language is often interpreted by many in our society as being synonymous with the actual use of violence. If we talk about blocking a motorway, or closing down schools, and hospitals, we should not be surprised that many people will do just that, even though such behaviour is illegal, and infringes on other people’s rights.

It is also distressing that to date no ‘minimum services agreements’ have been concluded in the public sector. Such agreements would at least guarantee the continuance of basic services in key public facilities. Why has this critical area of negotiating and bargaining not been completed, particularly in that we have already seen the impact of a total stay away in 2007?

I raise these concerns so that we as church do not see ourselves as outside of these critical social engagements. Those who know our church’s history will know that Methodists were instrumental in forming the first trade union. We should always stand close to the labour movement around the world, but we also value the importance of serious non-violent dialogue, which can only be guaranteed in a democratic constitutional environment.

Speaking of democracy I would also ask that we be alert and active in the current debate around the ‘freedom of information’ and ‘press freedom/responsibility’. We must be very vigilant when questions about media and information control/regulation are being spoken about by government. This is dangerous territory, and while the debate itself is healthy and positive, the mere suggestion that people should be silenced, and information be withheld by organs of the state should awaken our Christian and democratic consciences. We should know from a long history that it could be the media being controlled today, and the church or faith community tomorrow. Let us participate in the debate, and encourage rigorous accountability from both the state and the media. Let us also stand firm against any erosion of freedom, that could be the intention of some who feel threatened by the often, embarrassing exposures that arise in an open society.

Finally we have had some heartening responses to the crisis that has affected hospitals and other essential services during the strike action. Some of our members have already volunteered their services in some of these key facilities. I would encourage others to do the same where opportunity avails itself. Let us in the spirit of Christ be present and active with love in the places of pain and struggle. And above all let us not cease in our prayers, so that our hearts never become clogged with darkness and fear.

News from Seth Mokitimi Methodist Seminary

NEWS FROM SETH MOKITIMI METHODIST SEMINARY (where our ministers receive training - www.smms.ac.za)

All classes have been suspended today. All the seminarians will be serving at Townhill Hospital, the psychiatric hospital down town, adjoining the large Grey's Hospital. They have been in complete lockdown for a week; conditions are deplorable. We are all going with mops and buckets to clean, wash, and serve as menial servants. Cheri and some of the seminarians with nursing backgrounds will assist with patient supervision. It is a desperate situation. The presence and calming guidance of Cheri with her particular experience and expertise learned in the US jail system has been nothing short of prophetic!

Last night 16 seminarians volunteered to respond to a Macedonian call from Fort Napier hospital to assist from 6pm – 10pm because of staffing no-shows at night. They arrived at the hospital at night but thankfully the staff had returned to work. Nevertheless the courage of our seminarians, comprised of white and black nervous probationers, was magnificent.

I am leaving in a short while to get to the hospital gates to ensure safe passage for the bus bringing the seminarians to the hospital.

It has been a wonderful witness to Christ – I am immensely proud of the positive response to the seminarians who have understood "I was sick, and you visited me …" It has been a fitting prelude to the dedication of Christ the Servant Chapel and especially the words inscribed on the threshold.

Press release: "The Methodist Church of Southern Africa slams violence"

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa Slams Violence

The office of the Presiding Bishop of Southern Africa joins the other voices in condemning the violence being perpetrated during the civil service strike.

We are in solidarity with the public servants calling for a just and living wage and acknowledge that upholding human dignity is mandatory and that fair wages for work done are essential to maintaining dignity. We are however greatly distressed by the violence and destruction being used to achieve this. The end does not always justify the means. We urge the civil servants to demonstrate peacefully, in full recognition of the rights of the rest of the nation and cognisant of the fact that all that is destroyed today will have to be replaced tomorrow from the same purse.

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa also condemns the culture of violence and vandalism that now seems to be the face of every strike in the country. Such acts are retrogressive and do not help strengthen our young democracy. We call on all Methodists in the public service to examine their own conscience and stand up for their rights in a way that does not compromise their Christian witness. We are especially concerned about the disruption of essential services to the vulnerable particularly children and the elderly.

We plead with those negotiating on behalf of the government to reach a speedy and amiable resolution to this impasse.

The Methodist Church of Southern Africa : A statement of condolences
to the nation, families and relatives of the late Mr. Eugene
Terre'Blanche and Hon. Dr. Molefi Sefularo

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa,
Bishop Ivan Abrahams, has learnt of the deaths - in separate incidents
over the Easter weekend – of Mr. Eugene Terre'Blanche (leader of the
Afrikaner Weerstandbeweging, AWB) and of Dr. Molefi Sefularo, South
African Deputy Minister of Health – with deep shock and sadness.

The two personalities held vastly differing social and political
viewpoints, yet their deaths present an aura of senselessness
especially as both might have been avoidable.

As we commemorated Easter over the past week - a celebration of life
beyond death, healing over pain and suffering, light beyond darkness
and hope beyond despair – such celebrations do little to diminish our
sadness at the loss of two diverse public figures. In this spirit,
therefore, we offer our condolences and sympathies to nation, friends,
families and relatives of the deceased.

In the case of Mr. Terre'Blanche, we recognize that more needs to come
to light in dealing with the criminality surrounding his death and
urge the police and judiciary to leave no stone unturned through
investigation and prosecution. Should media reports be correct that
Mr. Terre'Blanche's death is linked to land and labour matters, we
advise that government sensitively use this unfortunate occurrence as
an opportunity to raise the level of national dialogue in order to
come to terms with the trauma of ongoing poverty and inequity fifteen
years into our constitutional democracy.

We also believe that it is extremely unfortunate that Dr. Sefularo has
become a victim of a road accident during the time his government was
promoting the road safety campaign "Arrive Alive". Faith communities
especially remember Dr. Sefularo as an anti-apartheid activist who
worked closely with the Eastern and Western Cape formations of the
United Democratic Front. We hail his humble contribution to end
apartheid together with his wisdom and energy that led to the founding
of a constitutional democracy. We also celebrate his contributions to
government policies aimed at combating HIV and Aids while making
health care more affordable to the poorest people and communities.

In December 2008, Bishop Abrahams pointed out that the World Health
Organisation (WHO) research had predicted that by 2020 road accidents
would move to sixth place a cause of global deaths. More, he said,
needed to be done to make roads safer for the poorest of our nation
and especially for the developing world. This information may be cold
comfort for the families of the late Dr. Sefularo. However, we
petition government – especially as the late Dr. Sefularo championed
the cause of the poorest - that it strengthen its plans for safer
roads and transportation both in the run up to and after the
completion of the FIFA World Cup Tournament.

Ash Wednesday - 17 February

Lent is the period of 40 days before Easter. During this time,
Christians all over the world sacrifice one thing, reminding
ourselves of three things. First, that God is the provider of all
things, second that we sometimes become dependent on things other
than God. Thirdly, that what we experience as sacrifice is a daily
reality for other people.

Lent is the spiritual journey of letting go and becoming aware of our
need for God.

Come celebrate the start of Lent at our Ash Wednesday service
(19:00). At the Glen we also celebrate Shrove Tuesday on the same day
(meeting for pancakes before the service from 18:00). Shrove Tuesday,
the day before Lent is celebrated as a day of penitence, eating
pancakes as Christians in ages past refrained from eating any meat or
animal products during Lent.

Bring your family and join us for pancakes and the Ash Wednesday
service. Think so long of what you are willing to surrender this Lent.

Money, sex and power

Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre

In 2004, Matthew Bentley (son of Wessel and Natalie) received life-saving surgery to correct his heart. Since then the Glen has given part of its tithe to the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Centre.

This Centre is situated at the Sunninghill hospital and draws children from all over the world who are in desperate need of medical treatment. Below are two photos. The first is of the "Tree of Life". The leaves on the branches list the names of all the children who have been helped. The roots list the names of all the contributors who have made this assistance possible. Among these you will find the Glen.

When you next visit Sunninghill hospital, spend some time at the Tree of Life and pray for all the doctors, contributors and recipients of care.

On Sunday the 18th of January, the Glen community celebrated the induction of Rev. Themba Mntambo. The Mntambo family were heartily welcomed by the Superintendent minister of the Morleta Circuit, Rev. Simon Prins, who reminded Themba and the congregation that God's call is sufficient to equip and encourage each individual for ministry.

Israel group reunion

It has been two months since we've arrived back in South Africa and now the group joined together to remember our journey to Israel and Jordan. Ethel drove all the way from Durban (700 km) and Jack and Barbara from Johannesburg (50km) to join us for this occasion.

He just had to have a braai! And we gave thanks for the hospitality of the people of Israel, especially our guide Shimon Zemer.

Celebrating Kevin Rheeder's progress

Kevin Rheeder is a young man whose life we celebrate. The Rheeders used to be members of the Glen, but moved away a year or two ago. Kevin was involved in a motorcar accident that almost cost him his life. The Rheeder family came to visit us at the Glen and told the wonderful story of Kevin's road to 'recovery'. David and Trish's farewell

After about 16 years of faithful ministry at the Glen, it is time to say farewell to David and Trish Buwalda. They will be retiring at the end of the year to Greytown in the Cape. The Glen hosted a farewell dinner for David and Trish which was supported very well. In an evening of great celebration, we remembered and gave thanks to God for working God's grace through this wonderful couple. David and Trish, we will miss you at the Glen, but know that you will always be welcome here.

Our church camp was held on the weekend of 10-12 October at Klein Paradys Guest Farm near Modimolle (Nylstroom). All campers experienced a relaxed get-away of fun, fellowship, worship, building puzzles, making collages, eating, braai-ing (meat and marshmallows!), swimming, walking, sleeping, watching rugby and/or Garfield, talking and laughing. Some of us came away with ear-ache from swimming in the heated pool, or sun-burn from playing in the cold-water pool. Many of us didn't want to leave and return home!

Ben and Lorraine celebrate 50 years of marriage.

Lorraine and Ben Mellet celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 18 October 2008. In typical Mellet hospitality style, it was a lovely party with family and friends. We are blessed by the witness of their love for and faithfulness to each other, and thank God that they are an integral part of our community. May they continue to enjoy God's blessings. Sorry that I didn't upload any photo's yesterday. Jordan is ridiculous with their prices. Tonight we are spending our last night in Amman, and what a hotel. Each room is the size of an apartment with marble floors, flat screen T.V. and all kinds of other luxuries. Yesterday we went to the Kerak Castle, which was very interesting. From there we drove to Petra, praying most of the time because the people here drive buses like they drive camels: all over the place! This morning we walked around the ancient city of Petra. It is beautiful and worth every nerve-wrecking minute on the bus. These are our last photos. God bless and thank you for your prayers. It has been a very meaningful pilgrimage.

We had quite some time digging at at archaeological site dating back about 2100 years. We found several pieces of ceramic jars, bones and shells. From here we visited the valley of Elah where David defeated Goliath. We stopped at the traditional site of Emmaus and had our last Scripture reading there. Tomorrow we say farewell to our brilliant guide, Shimon Zemer and our driver, Avner. We recommend them both for anyone interested in arranging a tour.

Our first stop today was at Bethlehem. The experience was somewhat indifferent, but the buildings are beautiful. We then took a walk through the Old City, entering through the Jaffa gate and leaving through the Damascus gate on our way to the Garden Tomb.

What an experience! We shared in a meditation and Communion in this serene spot in the middle of Jerusalem. This is a place to visit!

Today we went to the Western Wall where Wessel discovered a piece of writing on the wall which neither the tour guide nor Google seem to be able to answer. We wait in anticipation as this mystery is uncovered. From here, the City of David, the original city which David conquered from the Jebusites. From there we walked through Hezekiah's tunnel, an amazing engineering fete whereby a tunnel of about 500m was dug from two ends and met in the middle! How did they do that? The Holocaust museum was absolutely heart wrenching. The Childrens' memorial touched us all very deeply and we closed the day knowing that history has changed us.
